JaypoCON 2005 – Part 2 – Broken Dreams

Posted on January 31, 2005 by jaypoc

The trip up there was great. We made good time. About 15 mins from AC
we decided to stop in the rest stop, fuel up and stretch (We thought we
actually had like an hour to go). We pulled out from the stop and heard
a clunk. I thought it was just a rock or somethin’ on the road, but
aparently it was a piece of my car! The power steering went out and the
car stalled. I restarted it, but the car was overheating. We pulled
over and let the car cool down, but as soon as we took off it heated
right up. I didn’t have more than a few seconds before it was
overheating again.

What am I going to do now?

We got the car to a Sonoco station and found the accessory bely had
fallen completely off. That explained why I had no power steering and
why the car was overheating! We called for a tow-truck which
conveniently took 2 hours to get there. Even worse, Sunoco ran out of
hot-chocolate!!!

Something similar happened to me last year with my serpentine belt falling off. Then the AC stopped working as well as the power steering.

Luckily my car didn’t overheat too much, but I saw the needle moving slowly into the red. First time was on Broadway in Greenlawn, the second was on the northern state right before the Commack exit. One of the hoses blew on my mom’s bonneville in a really bad spot on the Southern state, despite some serious engine work being done, the car has never really been the same.

Note to self: if car overheats, try to pull over as soon as possible.. 2 hours for a tow truck?!!! jeez man. I guess it could have been worse…

Nod. As soon as I realized I was having problems I pulled over. Noticed as I was looking for a spot to pull onto that it was overheating. I don’t think there was too much damage. Certainly wasn’t much driving time in that condition… Fortunately the station was less than a quarter-mile and we had stopped for the car to cool down before continuing on….

Yes, It all could have been much worse… Only downfall is I lost 2 hours of gambling time and had dinner 2 hours later 🙂 The whole weekedn still kicked ass and all things considered it only cost $300 to fix the car. I was expecting around $500
