Not so typical Dell

Posted on January 8, 2007 by jaypoc

The thought of contacting DELL’s technical support usually causes my stomache to wretch, and with good reason. Every time I have to deal with DELL, someone convinces me that it’s time to start all over as the human race has hit an all time low. Today was the exception.

My laptop sound died, It’s probably the amp on the sound card, but to get it fixed, I need to let a tech monkey at Dell India East make that determination. Another issue is that I renewed my Next-Day-On-Site service with DELL and they applied it to the wrong laptop! It’s been over 3 months since I initially advised DELL of this issue. The first agent took my credit card and threw it away, as nothing was done and DELL had no record of it. The second call, 2 months (and a new credit card) later the issue was supposedly “escalated to operations” but after another months, even that agent seems to have stopped replying to my bi-weekly emails asking why it wasn’t done yet.

So I have 1 Laptop, I paid for 2 years of service on it. Those 2 years of service have been applied to a defective laptop I returned to DELL back in 2003. and somehow, very basic Mail-In service is active on this one.

But there’s a light at the end of this dark tunnel. As I said, today was an exception.

After telling a rep via the online chat that I “had been dealing with their Warranty Support Services” and having the response to that being, “Did you talk to DELL about this issue yet?” I called up ready for a fight with a sub-par, fake-americanized, peice of crap, Dell-Drone, but was pleasantly surprised by Brian. Okay that may not be his real name, but if more support technicians were like him, thet could be named “Squooshy” and I wouldn’t give a shit.

He was honest and straight-foward with me. He advised me what he could and couldn’t do for me, and actually listened to what I said. I did not have to repeat major points related to my issue as I have in the past. He actually showed intelligence and comprehension of what was going on. He truly knew what he was doing and demonstrated that on the phone with me by not making me walk through 6 hours of bullshit to tell him “There’s no sound on my laptop”. (DELL once told me to reinstall Windows XP as a fix for the dpi, Dots per Inch, setting being too high. The correct solution was right click on the desktop, and fix the setting!)

This post is a toast to Brian, and all the other technicians like him, not just at Dell, but any company that deals with the public.

Tuesday Update

Posted on December 19, 2006 by jaypoc

So I’ve been a bad jew and haven’t wished my Jewish LJ friends a Happy and Healthy Hanukkah. Even though it’s more than halfway over, I guess late is better than never 🙂

Also, I found two more Bluetooth devices so I added them to my previous post. Caller ID watches that receive the caller id information from the phone via bluetooth and displays the information on the face.

Round and around and around and…

Posted on December 10, 2006 by jaypoc

Working promotions for a radio station, you get to work in some pretty neat places. Today we were promoting Toys for Tots at Willis Hobbies in Mineola. If you haven’t been there, you’re missing out on one of the greatest shops for model cars, trains and R/C vehicles.

Anyways, I’ve been eyeing the Mini-R/C Copter on Thinkgeek.com for a while, and this place had them. They were also $10 cheaper. So I was considering them. They also had a larger/nicer mini-RC-copter for about $75. The difference was that the small one could only go up and down, but not propel fowards or backwards. The $75 could go up and down, and fowards too. I spent much of the 2-hour promotion pondering whether or not to get the $40 or the $70 one. Neither, of which I can really afford right now. So guess which one I chose…

… That’s right. The $200 one! ( The Blade CX for those in the know). I figured if I was going to spend money I don’t really have, I might as well get a GOOD one! This thing is hot. Two rotors, independantly controlled. It can go up and down, side to side, fowards and backwars, turn right and left, and crash.

I’ve gotten really good at that last one. Crash! While my friends were over, I flew it into my couch and tore apart the rotors. After they left I sat down with it and found replacing the rotors is a trivial task. Just unscrew em and screw on the replacements. Good thing I had bought a handfull of extra parts.

So I got it back together, and went on my second flight. Again! CRASH! This time it was bad. I don’t have the parts to fix it so I have to see if the local R/C-Hobby shops carry the parts. if not, It’s back to mineola next week.

It was kind of fun re-building it though 🙂 I’ll get the shop to help me calibrate the thing so I don’t have so much trouble with it next round. lol. And I think I’ll listen to the manual when it says to use in open spaces. My living room is not a good beginner “open-space” 🙂

    Guide to Bluetooth

Posted on November 8, 2006 by jaypoc

After receiving my first Bluetooth capable phone/PDA I decided to research all available Bluetooth capable devices. This article should sum up all the currently available Bluetooth devices. Feel free to write me with any items that I may have missed and I will add them.

    Bluetooth Connectivity

  • Desktop Computers
  • Laptop Computers
  • Cellular Phones
  • Home/Cordless Phones
  • Printers/Printer Adapters
  • Speakers/Headphones
  • Headsets (Headphone/Microphone combo)
  • GPS Recievers
  • Digital Cameras
  • Carphone/Car Stereo Integration
  • Keyboards
  • Video Game Controllers
  • Desktops, Laptops and PDAs

Personal computers and portable devices can be equipped with Bluetooth technology for the ability to connect wirelessly to just about any of the devices above. Extra functionality can be added and data synchronization/backup is possible.

    Cellphones

When someone says “Bluetooth”, the first device that comes to mind are cellphones. Bluetooth enabled cellphones can easily sync up with cordless headsets/earpieces for hands-free conversations. A connection to a PC could be used to back up and restore a phone book or settings and also to send pictures taken from the phone’s internal camera.

    Home Phones

Cellular phones are convenient, but as they are built more compact, they’re not the most comfortable to talk on for long periods of time. Many cordless phone manufacturers have developed cordless phone systems that work along with Bluetooth technology. The base-station of the cordless phones links to any Bluetooth-enabled cell phone and then transmits to/from the handsets via 2.4 Ghz or 5.8 Ghz like any other cordless phone.

    Printers

The biggest benefit of Bluetooth is that it provides wireless connectivity between 2 devices. This can be especially handy employed on a printer. Modern printers are being built with Bluetooth capabilities. Any PC or handheld device with in a 20 to 100 meter radius can connect to and print without the need to run and connect parallel or USB cables. For printers that do not come with this functionality built-in, manufacturers have created adapters that give any parallel or USB printer Bluetooth capabilities.

    Speakers and Headphones

There is definitely a market for wireless headphones or wireless speakers. There’s many technologies today to employ the service. 800Mhz, 900Mhz, 1.2Ghz radio, Infrared, 802.11b, and of course, Bluetooth.

    GPS Recievers

One of the biggest complaints among people who own combined GPS/PDA devices is that the battery life is greatly reduced by the power requirements of the GPS. With a Bluetooth enabled GPS receiver, the GPS unit has it’s own battery, so you don’t drain the additional power from the handheld’s battery. You can also easily re-locate the antenna with a better view of the sky for better reception.

    Digital Cameras

While not yet very common, more and more digital cameras are being shipped with the ability to send their pictures to a PC or printer wirelessly. Current technologies that allow this are 802.11 Wifi and Bluetooth.

    Automotive Integration

Bluetooth integration with automobiles is becoming more commonplace. Some car manufacturers (such as Audi) and some car stereo manufacturers are beginning to integrate speakerphones into their stereo systems. This enables drives with Bluetooth enabled cellphones to place and receive hands-free phone calls without the need for separate cellular service for their automobiles.

    Keyboards

Users of portable computers (PDAs) will appreciate a wide variety of keyboards available that connect via Bluetooth. Data entry on most hand-held devices is typically inefficient and slow. You either need to click with a stylus on a micro-sized on-screen keyboard, or learn the device’s Grafitti language. The other option is to connect your Bluetooth keyboard and type away as you would on any PC. Many of these keyboards even offer a stand to prop up the device. Keep in mind some of them have smaller keys so try to check it out or read reviews before you rush out to get one.

    Game Controllers

One of the coolest devices I came across in my research is the Chainput BGP-100. This is a game pad style controller that clips around your PDA/Smartphone giving you Up/Down/Left/Right as well as Action button capabilities. (Kind of resembles the layout of the classic NES controller. The control communicates with your handheld device over Bluetooth.
