Round and around and around and…

Posted on December 10, 2006 by jaypoc

Working promotions for a radio station, you get to work in some pretty neat places. Today we were promoting Toys for Tots at Willis Hobbies in Mineola. If you haven’t been there, you’re missing out on one of the greatest shops for model cars, trains and R/C vehicles.

Anyways, I’ve been eyeing the Mini-R/C Copter on Thinkgeek.com for a while, and this place had them. They were also $10 cheaper. So I was considering them. They also had a larger/nicer mini-RC-copter for about $75. The difference was that the small one could only go up and down, but not propel fowards or backwards. The $75 could go up and down, and fowards too. I spent much of the 2-hour promotion pondering whether or not to get the $40 or the $70 one. Neither, of which I can really afford right now. So guess which one I chose…

… That’s right. The $200 one! ( The Blade CX for those in the know). I figured if I was going to spend money I don’t really have, I might as well get a GOOD one! This thing is hot. Two rotors, independantly controlled. It can go up and down, side to side, fowards and backwars, turn right and left, and crash.

I’ve gotten really good at that last one. Crash! While my friends were over, I flew it into my couch and tore apart the rotors. After they left I sat down with it and found replacing the rotors is a trivial task. Just unscrew em and screw on the replacements. Good thing I had bought a handfull of extra parts.

So I got it back together, and went on my second flight. Again! CRASH! This time it was bad. I don’t have the parts to fix it so I have to see if the local R/C-Hobby shops carry the parts. if not, It’s back to mineola next week.

It was kind of fun re-building it though 🙂 I’ll get the shop to help me calibrate the thing so I don’t have so much trouble with it next round. lol. And I think I’ll listen to the manual when it says to use in open spaces. My living room is not a good beginner “open-space” 🙂
